I Finally Told My Own Story. Here’s Why Yours Matters Too

Woman sitting in the sand dunes at sunset lifestyle personal branding

For years, I’ve told other people’s stories for a living. Weddings, growing families, small businesses just finding their feet. I’ve spent countless sessions watching people relax in front of the camera, watching them stop worrying about what they look like and just be there. And somehow, through all of that, I never quite got around to telling my own.

This year, I finally did. I sat down and wrote out the story of my own brand properly, honestly, for the first time. If I’m being completely honest, it was harder than I expected. Turning the questions back on myself felt strange. I’m used to being the one behind the lens, not the one being looked at.

But here’s what I realised while I was doing it. Every business owner who’s ever sat across from me and said “I really don’t like being photographed” was feeling exactly what I felt sitting down to write my own story. That same instinct to hide behind the work instead of standing in front of it.

And every time, once it’s done, it feels like relief. Not vanity, relief. Because your story, your face, your actual voice, is what makes people trust you before they’ve even spoken to you. It’s what turns just another coach, stylist, or tradesperson into someone real. Someone people actually want to work with.

I think that’s the thing nobody tells you about personal branding. It’s not about looking polished or perfect. It’s not about pretending to be someone bigger or shinier than you are. It’s about finally letting people see the person actually doing the work, the one who shows up, who cares, who’s been quietly building something real the whole time.

This goes beyond a single profile photo too. Think about your website, your architecture or interior spaces and if its relevant to your business, your products in a beautifully styled setting, behind the scenes shots for social media, even coverage of an event you’re hosting. All of it works together to build a consistent, professional feel across everything people see of your business.

So if you’ve been putting off your own branding photos, telling yourself you’ll get around to it once things settle down, once you feel more “ready”, I want you to hear this from someone who went through the exact same thing herself. You’re never going to feel fully ready. I didn’t either. You just do it anyway, and trust that the version of you who walks away from that session, a little more seen, a little more real, was worth it.

My story’s out there now. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and it finally feels like the truth of what I do and who I am, for the people I work with. If you’ve been sitting on your own story for a while too, maybe it’s time.
